The 2017 SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay has been awarded Gold, this continues the stellar run this wine has had at the Sydney Royal Wine Show by picking up Gold three years in a row. Adding to this, the 2017 Flametree Sauvignon Blanc Semillon was also awarded Gold last night. Both wines were in a very tightly contested trophy taste off.

The Sydney Royal Wine show is passionate about supporting the Australian Wine Industry through learning & development and seeks to promote and reward excellence in Australian winemaking.

Chief Winemaker, Cliff Royle noted that “2017 was a cooler and later vintage than the previous 10 years; a year of elegant, perhaps even slightly lighter bodied wines, though ripe in flavour, vibrant and very perfumed. Higher than average yields in combination with a cooler season contributed to delayed ripening of the fruit and good acid retention.”

“The team at Flametree are very proud of the consistent press and wine show recognition being awarded to the Flametree SRS Chardonnay. The 2017 SRS Chardonnay was awarded a gold at the Sydney Wines Show and just missed out on a very tightly contested trophy for the best Chardonnay of the show for a second year running. The 2017 SRS Chardonnay is a great follow up wine on the 2016 and we expect similar success to last year’s wine”, says Chief Winemaker, Cliff Royle.

“To achieve a gold medal in the SBS class given the difficulties around the 2017 vintage is a testament to our creative winemaking team and our vineyard resources. There were only a hand full of gold medals handed out at Sydney, these wines all had ripe fruit flavours, nice texture, some complexity and lovely balance. The use of oak and solids in the wines has certainly given wider appeal to the 2017 wines.”
