Flametree wines has continued to perform well on a national level with fantastic results at the major capital city wine awards this year. The stunning SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2017 has picked up 5 gold medals at the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth Royal Wine Awards and at the Wine Show of WA.

Adding to these accolades the Flametree Pinot Rose 2018 was awarded Gold at the Wine Show of WA and the Flametree Sauvignon Blanc Semillon picked up Gold at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.

Ray Jordan in an article in the West Weekend on the 3rd November 2018, touched on this continued period of success. He noted “While justified praise was heaped on the recent Jimmy Watson winner in Melbourne, another West Australian success at the same show is just as noteworthy.”

“Over the past few years, Flametree – a previous Jimmy Watson winner – has been steadily collecting trophies and widespread acclaim for its SRS Chardonnays.”

“The Flametree SRS Chardonnay 2017 was the third consecutive chardonnay from the Margaret River producer to win gold at the show, earning a Consistency of Excellence award. Winemaker Cliff Royle has lifted this wine into the rarified air of the very best Margaret River chardonnays, putting it among Australia’s finest.”

“Royle achieves power and complexity with the fruit from this single site, and then with clever use of larger-format oak, caresses a high degree of delicacy and finesse.”

Ray touched on the fact that the SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay was awarded a Consistency of Excellence award at this year’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. This was actually the second consecutive year that Flametree was awarded the Consistency of Excellence award as 4 straight vintages of the SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay have been awarded Gold at this show, the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

In the same article, Ray also reviewed 5 current vintage wines:

Flametree SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2017 – 97 Points
“This wine is now firmly among the Margaret River chardonnay elite. It’s sourced from a single site in the Wallcliffe sub-region. All wild fermented and matured in large format French oak, with about 40% of it new. Wonderfully complex stone fruit, mineral and tight savoury notes. Very long and powerfully sustained palate. Classy Wine”

Flametree SRS Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – 96 Points
“A beautiful wine that captures the essence of this great vintage to perfection. Packed with blackberry and perfumed dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is a monumental statement of firm, chalky tannin, tight grained oak and super concentrated fruit. Has the structure and poise to handle extended cellaring but, gosh, it will be good drinking over the next few years if you must.”

Flametree SRS Margaret River Syrah 2016 – 93 Points
“This is a medium-bodied take on shiraz, hence the use of the name syrah. The fruit came from the Chapman Grove vineyard, which has produced some mighty good shiraz over the years from its 25 year old vines. Lovely spicy fruit, with hints of cloves and fresh turned earth. Tannins are chalky and fine, and the palate sits beautifully as it carries through to a long finish.”

Flametree Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2016 – 92 Points
“This is such a sweet, young wine. It was a challenging season, yet the fruit has been expertly harnessed and presented to reveal sweet fruit vibrancy and lively energy through the intense, balanced palate. Firmish, chewy tannins with good intensity and depth. Like to see it in a few years too.”

Flametree Pinot Rose 2018 – 93 Points
“A somewhat sophisticated Rose that has been subjected to serious winemaking. Interesting take here in that the light pressings were fermented on vermentino skins and a small amount of vermentino juice, with wild yeasts in old oak puncheons. The result is an eminently complex and intriguing twist on the variety, offering plenty of drinking enjoyment at this time of the year.”
