A youthful ruby red in colour with purple hues. The bouquet is a mix of fresh berry fruits and
sweet toasted oak. Rich in classic Cabernet notes of sweet blackberry and blackcurrant,
rubbed dry herbs and soft cocoa and mocha spice, the palate’s opulence is shaped by a fine
tannin structure and bright acidity. This wine is definitively Cabernet – fine, pure and
perfumed, with great length of flavour, balance and poise. Tasted: Dec 2018.

Vintage at Howard Park is a time of frenetic activity, excitement and lots of weather watching
as the annual progression of the seasons, determines our quality and fate. The 2016 vintage
commenced in the Great Southern on 6th February and concluded on 10th April. In Margaret
River, vintage started on 15th February and was wrapped up by 12th April. It was the first year
that all of our Great Southern harvest was made at the Margaret River winery, following the
closure of the Denmark site. The winter, mild and sufficiently wet was followed by a spring,
less blustery than preceding years and a hot start to summer.
When veraison began, in late January, the native marri blossom was abundant in Margaret
River yet curiously absent in the Great Southern. The “bird pressure” as we call it, does have
a significant impact on quality, quantity and stress levels. As summer progressed, the weather
conditions between our two premium grape growing regions diverged. The Great Southern
spent the vintage period in and out of humid on- shore streams with the resultant rainfall to
April , twice the average. Margaret River did experience a unprecedented deluge in late
January, which in hindsight, was more blessing than curse, due to the dryness of the soil
profile and the timing of the event. The remainder of the vintage in Margaret River progressed
with little weather distractions whereas the Great Southern was peppered by annoying rains,
humidity and birds. In review, the quality of the 2016 vintage ranges from good to great
across all varieties, thanks to the diligent efforts of our vineyard team to select only the best
grapes under sometimes, challenging circumstances.

This wine was sourced from Leston in Margaret River & Abercrombie in Mount Barker (WA).
Vine age: Leston Block 29, 9 years & Abercrombie 43 years
Clone: Houghton. Soils: Shallow lateritic gravels over sandy, clay loam.
Aspect: Ridge top with slight north to north westerly aspects.

Harvest occurred from late March to early April 2016. Small parcels are hand-picked and
sorted to remove matter other than grapes before fermentation. Fermentation occurred in
headed-down closed stainless and small open vat steel fermenters. Selected parcels
remained on skins post the fermentation to further enhance the tannin profile while others
were pressed at dryness to capture fruit vibrancy. Each batch is matured separately in order
to build a wine history over time.
Barrel maturation: 22 months in 60% new and 40% older French oak barriques. After a light
egg white fining and filtration, the wine is bottled.
