The bouquet is an enchanting mix of lemon myrtle, dusty pollen, waxy citrus and stone fruits. From
lengthy time on lees, the palate is supple yet rich in flavours of patisserie and nutmeal, freshened with
bright citrus, ripe peach and melon. The fine savoury note and mineral acidity, so characteristic of the
region, shapes the wine and gives a long finish.
Tasted December 2018

By comparison with 2017, the growing and ripening season of 2018 saw a return to weather
conditions more typical of the past decade in the grape growing regions of Western Australia.
The Great Southern vintage commenced on 9th March with Chardonnay for sparkling base
and concluded with Cabernet Sauvignon on 23rd April.
In the cool, continental climate of the Great Southern the winter of 2017 was sufficiently
cold and wet. The spring, less blustery and drier than preceding years, gave way to a warm
and consistent summer period. As summer passed and autumn began, the weather remained
mild yet dry.
The humid on-shore streams that bring drizzle and cloud cover in the early autumn did not
eventuate and the entire harvest was conducted in near perfect conditions.
With moderate yields across all varieties, full ripeness occurred with little delay to flavour
development.
An early quality assessment of the 2018 vintage suggests a very good to great outcome.
The whites are exhibiting very pure and focused varietal notes while the reds show ripe berry
flavours and supple tannins.

The Flint Rock Chardonnay is a selection from individual vineyard blocks and clones that grow on our
Mount Barrow in Mount Barker. These blocks are located on a south facing ridge-top with elevations of
between 285 to 370m. The landforms of the region are some of the oldest in the world with shallow and
low fertility soils which provide a natural limit to yield potential.

The individual vineyard blocks that comprise Flint Rock Chardonnay are vinified separately. Each batch
is hand-picked, cooled and sorted before pressing to extract the free run juice. Fermentation and malolactic occurs in a combination of older French oak and stainless steel tank. The temperature of
fermentation is between 18ºC to 22ºC and the lees are stirred from the end of fermentation and
throughout the malo-lactic. After 10 months on lees, the wine is blended to tank and held for 2 months
prior to fining, filtration and bottling.
