Howard Park Flint Rock Riesling

The name “Flint Rock” epitomizes the fine mineral structure and savoury elegance of wines grown in the wildly remote and awesomely beautiful Great Southern region of Western Australia. At Howard Park, our regional selection of Riesling draws upon the varietal heroes of the 3 primary sub-regions; Mt Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River to craft wines with regional typicity and character. Riesling is a true hero of the Great Southern – demanding, sensitive yet tough enough to thrive in the vagaries of this cool, dry climate. Wines crafted from Riesling are exceptionally revealing and critical of the environment in which they grow, and the human interactions engaged to create them.

Fruit, floral and spice notes of bush lime, lemon myrtle, native frangipani and star anise make for
an enticing bouquet. Bright citrus, juicy red apples and rich beurré bosc pear provide fruit volume
and a suppleness of texture to the palate. Fine savoury/ mineral notes and a tangy acidity give
crispness and balance to finish.
Tasted Dec 2018

By comparison with 2017, the ripening season of 2018 saw a return to weather conditions
more typical of the past decade in the grape growing regions of Western Australia. The Great
Southern vintage commenced on 9th March with Chardonnay for sparkling base and
concluded with Cabernet Sauvignon on 23rd April.
In the cool, continental climate of the Great Southern the winter was sufficiently cold and wet.
The spring, less blustery and drier than preceding years, gave way to a warm and consistent
summer period. As summer passed to autumn, the weather remained mild yet dry and the entire
harvest was conducted in near perfect conditions with moderate yields across all varieties, full
ripeness occurred with little delay to flavour development.
An early quality assessment of the 2018 vintage suggests a very good to great outcome. The white
are exhibiting very pure and focused varietal notes while the reds show ripe berry flavours and
supple tannins.

The Flint Rock Riesling is a selection from Mount Barker and Porongurup
Each sub region brings its own personality to the wine. From Porongurup, the line and length
of bright citrus with savoury minerals and lifted spice harmonizes beautifully with Mount Barker’s
juicy pomme fruits and citrus perfume. Tempered by low rainfall and growing in lateritic
gravelly, sandy loams of variable fertility and water holding capacity, the vines are low to
moderate in yield.

Harvest – Mid to late March 2018. Each vineyard block is vinified separately in stainless steel
tanks. After settling bright, the free run juice is racked before a long and cold fermentation to
preserve freshness and fine fruit flavours. After a light milk fining and filtration, the wine is
bottled.
