chocolate. This enticing entry is supported by the soft, supple texture of the palate with is
opulent blue and red fruits flavours, dusted with cocoa /oaky notes and finished with fine
silky tannins. A deftly crafted wine that showcases pure, sweet fruit, well integrated and
complexed with savoury and mineral notes. Tasted: July 2018 JM

Vintage at Howard Park is a protracted event which commences each February and
concludes in April. During this period all our grapes that grow in the Great Southern and
Margaret River are brought to the winery for the vinification. It is a time of frenetic activity,
excitement and lots of weather watching. As the harvest draws near, the weather comes
under increased scrutiny as the annual progression of the seasons decrees the quality and style
of each vintage.
The 2016 vintage in the Great Southern commenced on 6th February and concluded on 10th
April. In this cool continental climate, the winter of 2015 was mild with sufficient rains to
replenish catchments. The spring, less blustery than preceding years, gave way to a hot start
to summer. When verasion began in mid-January, the native marri blossom was curiously
absent and the ‘bird pressure’ significant. As summer passed into autumn, the more southerly
regions spent the vintage period in and out of humid on-shore streams with rainfall to April,
twice the average.
In review, the quality of the 2016 vintage ranges from good to great across all varieties,
thanks to the diligent efforts of our vineyard team to select only the best grapes under
challenging circumstances. Such vintage conditions test our collective expertise to create
good outcomes. Under such pressure, the necessary changes to picking criteria can yield
unexpected, positive results and the opportunity to acquire new knowledge from the
experience.

Harvest occurred late March 2016. Small parcels are hand-picked and all batches are sorted
to remove matter other than grapes, before fermentation.
Fermentation occurs in open vat and closed stainless steel fermenters. Select parcels of wine
are run to barrel between 2 & 3º to capture new barrel characters from the final degrees of
fermentation. The remaining blocks are pressed at dryness to retain fruit vibrancy. Each
batch is matured separately in order to build a wine history over time. The wine is matured
for a minimum of 18 months in 40% new and 60% older, French oak barriques, hogsheads
and puncheons. After a light egg white fining and filtration, the wine is bottled.
